Description

This is a Georgian, English, balustroid stem wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1740.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an ogee-shaped bowl measuring 4.8 cm (1.9 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved with swags and tails under the rim and is moulded with finger fluting to the lower half. The bowl sits on a plain stem with a medial swollen knop which ends in a conical, folded foot which measures 6.6 cm (2.6 inches) in diameter. The glass is 13 cm (5.2 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There are a couple of tiny white inclusions (probably clinker) in the metal of the bowl dating from manufacture.

English lead glass weighing in at 105 g. (~ 4 oz.).

This 18th-century English Georgian wine glass is formed from clear lead glass in a balustroid style. The ogee-shaped bowl features a delicate swag and tail engraved pattern running below the rim, while the lower section displays vertical finger fluting. Below, a plain stem incorporates a prominent medial swollen knop, leading down to a folded conical foot with a circular profile. Tiny white manufacturing inclusions are visible within the metal of the bowl, alongside age-related wear to the foot rim and a rough pontil mark underneath. Standing 13 cm high and 6.6 cm wide, the piece weighs 105 g. Suitable for display on a sideboard top, the wine glass brings traditional English Country House character to a dining room or living space. It can be showcased within a glazed cabinet or placed on a table surface as a decorative accent. The clear material catches the ambient light, highlighting the engraved lattice motif and the faceted mouldings of the lower bowl. Handling with care preserves the historic condition of the lead glass, maintaining its place among functional glassware collections.

Georgian balustroid wine glasses feature a central stem shaped with knops inspired by architectural balusters, produced in Britain during the mid-to-late 18th century.

These drinking vessels were hand-blown using heavy lead glass, featuring wheel-engraved motifs, hand-tooled knopped stems, and folded or conical feet.

Authentic pieces typically display a pontil mark on the underside of the foot, subtle air bubbles or striations within the glass, and hand-engraved surface decoration.

Position stemware on a dining room sideboard or inside a glazed display cabinet where natural light highlights the engraving and glass clarity.

Wash carefully by hand using lukewarm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding hot water temperatures and dishwashers to prevent thermal stress or clouding.
