Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1870s:
Red painted Dai Nippon mark on the base: Japanese Meiji period export manufacture.
Iron-red and gilt scheme with figural scenes: late nineteenth-century Kutani ceramic work.
Unglazed foot rim with ingrained dust and shelf wear: decades of normal handling.
Fine hand-drawn linework in iron red: painted by brush rather than transfer printed.

This large antique Japanese Kutani bottle vase dates from the Meiji period around 1870. The porcelain vessel features a long neck, a bulbous body, and a stepped foot base, decorated with iron-red enamels, gold leaf gilding, butterfly motifs, and hand-painted figural scenes. The main body displays a golden pheasant with spread wings framing a central panel of Geisha in a rural setting, alongside iron-red floral patterns and Greek key motifs. The neck is painted with colourful butterflies on an ironstone and gilded ground, and the base bears an artist signature. The vase measures 40 cm high and 18 cm wide. It works well placed on a sideboard top in a living room, dining room, or hallway to bring traditional Asian design and rich colour tones into an interior space.

Kutani ware is a style of Japanese porcelain traditionally originating from Kutani, now Yamanaka, Ishikawa prefecture. Renowned for its overglaze enamels, late 19th-century or Meiji period Kutani often features intricate gilding and iron-red palette designs depicting landscapes, figures, and floral motifs.

Kutani porcelain is crafted from kaolin clay fired at high temperatures, then decorated using overglaze enamel pigments known as the gosai palette or iron-red glazes, frequently accented with gold leaf or liquid gold detailing.

Authentic antique Kutani pieces usually feature hand-painted overglaze decoration with visible texture, detailed gilding, and specific red iron oxides. They often bear a hand-painted multi-character Kutani mark in red or gold on the underside base.

A tall Kutani vase functions as a focal accent on a dark wood sideboard, console table, or inside a curated shelving display. Pairing its warm terracotta hues and gilt details with neutral textures allows the intricate hand-painted artwork to stand out.

Clean delicate overglaze decorated porcelain with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or soft brush to remove dust. Avoid chemical cleaners, abrasive pads, or immersion in water, as these can strip or degrade the delicate gold leaf detailing.
