Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

You can contact Robert and Wendy by email or telephone to discuss items from their extensive catalogue of attractive pieces and make purchases. Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

This French mantel clock garniture from 1900 comprises a central arch-topped clock and a matching pair of urn cassolettes, executed in mottled red rouge marble with gilt brass and bronze mounts, white enamel, and glass panels. The plain domed case of the clock features moulded decoration, flat-topped feet at the front, a white enamelled chapter ring with black roman numerals, and a bevelled glass front panel revealing the ornate mercury pendulum and visible mechanism inside. Two matching side urns stand on stepped square bases with gilt brass trims. All three pieces sit on flat surfaces in a domestic setting such as a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table in a living room, dining room, or hallway. The central clock measures 39 cm high, 27 cm wide, and 16 cm deep, while each urn measures 27 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. The fourteen-day striking mechanism includes an open brocot escapement signed by Samuel Marti, with winding points accessible through the glazed, hinged bezel on the dial face and a rear door providing access to the movement. Gilt bronze mounts enhance the marble bodies of both the clock and the flanking urns, creating a symmetrical decorative set suitable for traditional interior displays.

A French clock garniture is a decorative three-piece set originating in 18th-century France, comprising a central mantel clock flanked by two matching ornamental sidepieces, such as urns, cassolettes, or candelabra.

Nineteenth-century French clock sets were commonly constructed using carved marble, slate, or onyx, complemented by gilt brass or ormolu mountings and hand-painted enamel dials.

Authentic French clocks from this era typically feature maker stamps stamped directly onto the rear brass movement plates, mercury temperature-compensated pendulums, enamel dials with Roman numerals, and heavy marble or metal casings.

Position the central clock symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard, arranging the two matching side urns at equal distances to create balanced architectural proportions against modern backgrounds.

Wipe the marble surfaces gently using a soft cloth dampened with warm water, avoid abrasive polish on brass mountings, and instruct a professional horologist to service the mechanical movement every five years.
