Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Cast brass Corniche case: standard late Victorian and Edwardian French manufacture.
Platform lever escapement: typical horological arrangement for turn-of-the-century carriage clocks.
Blued steel wire gong: favoured striking mechanism from the late 1880s onwards.
Thick bevelled glass panels: traditional hand-finished glazing fitted to quality clock cases.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

A French brass-cased striking carriage clock from 1900 reflects the style of the 19th century. The piece comprises brass, glass, and enamel materials in a brass colour scheme, incorporating a folding handle, bevelled glass panels, and a Roman numeral dial. Visible details include a white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, blued steel hands, an oblong top glass displaying the lever escapement, and a shaped carrying handle with turned cylindrical accents atop a stepped rectangular base. Measuring 13 cm in height with the handle down, 9 cm in width, and 8 cm in depth, the clock suits placement on a mantelpiece or desk in a gentleman's library. It brings period character to a traditional home interior while serving as a functional timekeeper.

FAQs

A striking carriage clock is a portable spring-driven timepiece developed in early nineteenth-century France, designed with an internal chiming mechanism that sounds on the hour and half-hour.

These timepieces typically feature a cast brass or gilded bronze case, clear bevelled glass panels, a white enamel dial, and a steel mechanical movement.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples often feature bevelled glass panels, enamel dials with Roman numerals, maker hallmarks on the back plate, and heavy solid brass construction.

Position the clock on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or desk alongside structured contemporary accents to highlight its polished metallic finish and refined geometric profile.

Keep the internal movement free from dust by ensuring glass panels remain secure, wind the mechanism regularly using a dedicated key, and clean the external brass surface with a soft, dry microfibre cloth.
