This antique English linen chest dates to the William III period of the early 18th century. Constructed from oak in a dark brown tone with warm caramel hues, the coffer features a flat hinged lid above a three-panelled front carved with foliate medallions in relief, a repeating oval guilloche frieze, and a cast iron lock escutcheon with no key. The structure stands upon a quartet of stile feet, displaying an aged patina with light wear from gentle use and visible fine grain interest across the select timber stocks. Measuring 62 cm high, 135.5 cm wide, and 47.5 cm deep, the generous internal storage compartment includes a candle box on the left side, suitable for holding blankets or cushions. The piece functions effectively in a home as a distinctive seat base placed within a bay window or positioned against a living room wall for everyday storage.

Dating from the late 17th century, William III coffers reflect the transition towards refined floral panel carvings and structured frame-and-panel joinery in English furniture design.

These pieces were crafted predominantly from English oak using joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs, alongside hand-carved decorative panels.

Authentic period coffers typically exhibit hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular wooden peg ends, authentic iron lock plates, and deep natural patination within the interior cavity.

An antique coffer functions effectively in modern interiors as an entryway bench, a window seat beneath a bay window, or decorative storage positioned at the foot of a bed.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish annually, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
