This large seventeenth-century Jacobean coffer is fashioned from dark brown oak with iron hardware. The exterior displays deep surface patinated tones across its timber panels, showing three arcaded front sections beneath a lunette carved frieze, guilloche carved vertical borders, and heavily carved ends. Two metal strap hinges secure the top lid, which opens to an internal storage compartment fitted with an original lock. The whole piece is raised on four prominent turned bun feet. It measures 90 cm high, 144 cm wide, and 58 cm deep. Suitable for placement along a hallway wall, in a living room, or at the foot of a bed, this oak chest provides functional storage space while serving as a traditional focal point in an English country house interior. The robust construction and period detailing make it a practical repository for blankets, linens, or household items.

A coffer is a heavy, wooden storage chest constructed with a hinged lid, panelled sides, and frame joining. In seventeenth-century Britain, coffers served as foundational household furniture for storing linens, clothing, and valuables.

Period coffers were primarily constructed from solid English oak using pegged mortise and tenon joinery. Hardware typically comprised hand-forged iron strap hinges, latches, and internal locks.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand-planed timber, wooden pegs securing joints, uneven oxidation on the undersides, and age-related wood shrinkage across wide panels. Relief carvings commonly display regional motifs such as arcading, lunettes, and guilloche bands.

A carved oak coffer provides visual weight and texture when positioned in an entry hall, at the foot of a bed, or along a main reception room wall. It serves as decorative architectural storage while anchoring modern art or neutral textiles above it.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the wood grain to maintain the patination. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent timber movement.
