Early 17th Century Oak Coffer C. 1630

17th century
Description

An early joined oak coffer with original carving of palmettes to the stiles at front and side panels and with geometric, rose carved wheels to the top rail and with a blocked and carved bottom rail which continues to both sides panels. The side stiles carved with double running cable

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Jacobean coffers from the early 17th century typically feature joined oak construction, framed panels, and geometric or botanical relief carvings along the frieze and panel faces.

These storage trunks were predominantly constructed from solid English oak utilizing mortise-and-tenon joints secured with wooden pegs, often paired with forged iron hinges and lock plates.

Authentic pieces feature hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular hand-cut wooden pegs, original pin hinges or strap hinges, and natural surface patination caused by oxidation over centuries.

An oak coffer functions as statement storage in a modern hallway, living room, or bedroom, bringing textural contrast when paired with contemporary soft furnishings and clean architectural lines.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood and protect the original finish, avoiding harsh liquid cleaners.
