Adze and hand-saw marks on the backboards: early manual timber conversion.
Hand-forged rosehead nails on the underside: early fastening method.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This small seventeenth-century Jacobean oak coffer displays a dark brown timber finish with visible grain and natural warmth. Constructed with pegged joinery, the rectangular chest features a two-plank hinged top above a foliate frieze carved with lunettes, surmounting a pair of panels decorated with hand-carved central lozenges and corner motifs. The front upright stile includes carved initials, while the lower front rail shows characteristic wear to the bottom edge. Original ring hinges secure the lid, and the main body stands upon sturdy vertical leg supports. Measuring 63 cm high, 108 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, this practical storage piece fits naturally in a hallway, living room, or bedroom for linens and household items. The traditional English country house design integrates easily into period or contemporary interiors as an accent furniture piece.

FAQs

A coffer is a wooden storage chest featuring a hinged lid, historically constructed in European households to store bedding, linens, and household valuables.

They were typically hand-crafted from solid English oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, often embellished with hand-carved relief panels.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed timber surfaces, wooden peg construction rather than modern metal fasteners, historic iron hardware, and natural wear patterns along touchpoints.

An oak coffer functions effectively in an entryway or living area, offering functional storage while bringing historic texture and warmth into contemporary spaces.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry lint-free cloth and applying beeswax once or twice annually to protect the timber and preserve the historic patina.
