This seventeenth-century Jacobean oak coffer displays a dark brown timber finish and original hand-carved decoration. The rectangular panelled lid sits above a front frieze featuring carved arches, while the two main front panels contain intricate scrollwork motifs. Notched stiles frame the composition, complemented by vertical carved uprights and a central wrought iron lockplate that secures the front. The structure stands raised on high stiles. Measuring 61 cm high, 104 cm wide, and 50 cm deep, this practical storage chest is suitable for placement in a hallway, bedroom, or living room. It functions effectively as a decorative furniture piece for holding blankets, linens, or general household items within a traditional interior setting.

A 17th-century oak coffer is a wooden storage trunk constructed during the Jacobean or Carolean eras. Featuring panelled construction and hand-carved decorative motifs, these chests served as primary storage containers for textiles, household linens, and valuables.

These coffers were crafted from solid native oak timber using frame-and-panel construction held together with hand-turned wooden dowels or pegs. Iron hardware, such as hand-forged strap hinges and lockplates, was added for functionality and security.

Authentic pieces display signs of hand-planed timber, irregular pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery, and deep natural oxidisation around iron fittings. Carving details, such as lunettes, strapwork, or gouge-work on the stiles, reflect the regional carving styles of the seventeenth century.

An oak coffer functions as a focal piece when placed in a hallway, at the foot of a bed, or positioned in a living area as an alternative to a coffee table. Contrast the dark, patinated wood against neutral painted walls and understated modern upholstery.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax paste once or twice a year to preserve the patina. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and maintain a stable indoor humidity level to prevent the oak panels from splitting.
