Charming 17th-Century Joined Oak Coffer with Stunning Patina, Lancashire, c.1678 A superb quality 17th-century joined oak coffer from Lancashire, circa 1678, displaying wonderful upright proportions and a beautifully untouched patina.The coffer retains its original hinged lid with large iron strap hinges, above a finely worked four-panel front. Each panel is carved with a petal flowerhead roundel, while the top rail is decorated with a guilloche border enclosing various flowerheads, and bears the inscription “IMS 1678”. The whole stands on slender, run-moulded extended stile supports, integral to the construction.In completely honest, unrestored condition, this is an excellent early example of English country furniture, traditionally used for storing bedding, linens or valuables.
