Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Early Victorian clear cut glass spirit decanter from 1850 manifests the refined aesthetic of a gentleman's library. This clear lead crystal object takes a thistle form, incorporating a fluted base, slice cut shoulders, an applied neck ring, and a flared neck. The exterior exhibits extensive hobnail and porthole cutting arranged in a wrythen pattern, alongside a polished pontil mark on the underside and a matching flat faceted mushroom stopper on top. The piece measures 20 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 11 cm deep. In a modern interior, this vessel suits placement on a sideboard top or drinks cabinet for serving spirits. The clear reflective material and intricate hand-cut geometry catch ambient light from lamps or windows, contributing traditional character to a dining room, study, or living space. Regular upkeep involves careful hand washing to preserve the polished glass surface and crisp faceted edges.

FAQs

Early Victorian cut glass is characterised by heavy lead crystal, intricate geometric wheel-cut patterns, such as strawberry diamonds and prism cuts, alongside substantial stopper designs.

Victorian decanters were crafted from heavy lead crystal glass, hand-blown into moulds and detailed using rotating abrasive wheels to cut deep decorative facets and geometric patterns.

Authentic pieces feature high lead content giving significant physical weight, hand-ground stopper stems tailored specifically to the individual neck opening, and subtle wear on the base.

Position the decanter on a dark timber sideboard, brass tray, or bar cart, allowing natural light to refract through the geometric facets and create visual depth.

Hand wash using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding extreme temperature changes; use soft brushes for interior cleaning and ensure complete drying before replacing the glass stopper.
