Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Random scratches across the undersides: decades of resting on tables.
Deep wheel-cut panel facets: hand cutting on a wheel rather than modern pressing.
Ground stopper plugs: individually fitted by hand before modern factory sizing.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This set of four nineteenth-century French Regency liqueur decanters is made from clear cut crystal with moulded neck rings, panelled bodies, and faceted stoppers. Each piece stands at 24.5 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 9 cm deep, providing a balanced proportion for a collection. The glass displays transparent clarity, showing bright light reflections across the geometric surfaces and polished facets. Some minor chips are visible along the edges of the components due to age and handling. The faceted stoppers fit into the slender necks above the multi-panelled bodies that taper toward the flat bases. These decanters suit placement on a dining room sideboard top or a drinks cabinet surface to hold spirits or liqueurs during social gatherings. They integrate well into traditional or formal interior schemes as functional serveware or decorative tabletop accessories.

FAQs

Liqueur decanters gained widespread popularity during the Georgian and Regency periods when serving after-dinner spirits and fortified wines became an established formal dining custom. These smaller vessels were specifically designed to display clear or richly coloured liquors on sideboards and dining tables.

Traditional glass decanters were hand-blown before skilled craftsmen cut geometric facets and panels into the thick glass using rotating grinding wheels. Stoppers were subsequently hand-ground to fit the specific neck opening of each individual bottle to ensure an airtight seal.

Authentic period decanters often display minor irregularities from hand-cutting, a polished pontil mark on the underside of the base, and age-related wear to the bottom contact points. Additionally, original stoppers frequently feature matching hand-cut numbers etched onto the stopper shank and inner neck rim.

Displaying a group of decanters together on a silver, brass, or wooden tray creates a structured focal point on a sideboard, bar cart, or console table. Placing them near ambient lighting allows light to refract through the faceted glass surfaces.

Wash decanters by hand using lukewarm water, mild detergent, and a soft bottle brush, avoiding dishwasher heat which can cloud lead crystal. To remove interior liquid stains, submerge surgical spirits or specialised cleaning crystals inside the vessel, rinsing thoroughly and drying inverted before replacing stoppers.
