Exhibit Antiques has dated these Georgian Cut Glass Decanters to the Georgian era.
A superb pair of Georgian Nelson or cylinder glass whisky or spirit decanters dating to c1820.
They retain their original mushroom stoppers, deeply diamond cut with strawberry-cut faces.

The cylindrical bodies display an impressive range of early 19th century cutting techniques arranged in three distinct bands. The upper section has large raised diamonds with finely strawberry-cut centres. The central band consists of large circular disc cuts, while the lower section has alternating diagonal prism and cross-cut decoration with areas of fine thatch cutting. The bases are finished with deep radial cutting.

The sheer variety of cutting is particularly impressive. By the Regency period, English cut glass had developed into a highly skilled decorative art, with cutters combining deep geometric forms with increasingly intricate surface decoration. Decanters such as these provided an ideal canvas on which to demonstrate those skills with the different cuts refracting candlelight and giving the glass much of its brilliance at the dining table.

A stunning matching pair and an excellent demonstration of the glass cutter's art during the early 19th century.
