Description

This is a mid-European (probably German) enamelled spirit flask dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1750.

The flask is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with over 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the base.

The flask is rectangular in shape with canted corners measuring 7 cm (2.8 inches) in width, by 5.5 cm (2.2 inches) in depth and 14.5 cm (5.8 inches) in height. The flask is polychrome enameled with displays of flowers to one of the broader sides and with a bird within a cartouche to verso. There are enamelled polychrome leaf fronds and flowers on the narrower sides between flowers and swirls on the corners and a white and blue enamelled band to the top of the flask, which is topped off by a pewter cap at the neck. There are no chips, cracks, or any obvious evidence of restoration to the glass. There is some light rubbing of the enamel at certain points. Unusually it retains its screw-on top to the cap.

It weighs 240 g. (~ 8 1/2 oz.).

Georgian enamelled glassware, produced during the 18th and early 19th centuries, frequently featured vibrant, hand-painted motifs influenced by continental European styles, particularly German and Bohemian traditions.

These items were typically mouth-blown from clear or potash glass, then hand-decorated using opaque coloured enamel paints that were fired at low temperatures to bond with the glass surface.

Authentic pieces exhibit wear consistent with age, such as fine surface scratches on the base and slight irregularities or bubbles within the hand-blown glass structure, alongside raised, tactile enamel work.

This type of decorative object can be displayed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or sideboard as a standalone sculptural piece or used to introduce a splash of historical colour and craftsmanship into a room.

Preserve these items by keeping them out of direct sunlight to prevent paint fading, dusting them gently with a dry, soft cloth, and avoiding immersion in water to protect fragile enamelled decorations.
