A lantern clock is an early type of domestic weight-driven mechanical clock, originating in England during the late 16th century and widely used throughout the 17th century, characterised by its brass frame, top bell, and wall-hanging design.

These clocks were traditionally constructed primarily from cast and hammered brass for the frame, chapter ring, frets, and dial, often featuring iron movements, steel hands, and lead or iron weights.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut brass work, fire-gilt or engraved details, specific structural joining methods such as iron pins rather than screws, and hallmarks or signatures consistent with known makers of the era.

Position the clock on a neutral, solid-coloured wall or above a traditional mantelpiece to let the metallic finishes and historical silhouette stand out as a focal point without visual clutter.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight and damp environments to prevent metal oxidation, avoid harsh chemical polishes on the brass surfaces, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced periodically.
