Tunbridge Ware is a type of decorative woodwork characteristic of the spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent, England, famed for its intricate mosaic veneer patterns constructed from multiple tiny coloured wood segments.

These items are typically constructed using a local or imported timber base, such as mahogany or walnut, embellished with thousands of precisely cut triangles and polygons from naturally coloured British and exotic woods to form pictorial or geometric designs.

Authentic pieces feature extremely fine mosaic tesserae without printed elements, often accompanied by a characteristic stick-ware geometric border and occasionally bearing the manufacturer label of makers such as Barton or Nye on the underside.

A tea caddy works well as a sculptural surface object placed on a bookshelf, coffee table, or console, adding texture, historic interest, and warmth through its natural timber tones.

Preserve inlaid wooden items by keeping them out of direct sunlight, maintaining stable relative humidity to prevent the wood or glue from drying and cracking, and dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth without using liquid polishes.
