Carriage clocks originated as portable timepieces designed for travellers during the 18th and 19th centuries, with Victorian makers incorporating elaborate decorative silver cases and intricate mechanical movements.

These timepieces typically feature a brass or metal framework encased in hallmarked sterling silver, often decorated with repousse or chased ornamentation, enclosing a mechanical spring-driven movement.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks on the silver case matching known silversmiths, original mechanical escapement mechanisms, and period-appropriate wear and patination.

Positioning the clock on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table introduces a focal point of metallic texture and historical craftsmanship that contrasts effectively with contemporary minimalist decor.

Preservation requires gentle dusting of the silver case without abrasive polishes, avoiding direct sunlight, and having the mechanical movement professionally serviced by a horologist every few years.
