FAQs

Toleware refers to utilitarian metal objects, typically iron or steel, that have been lacquered, japanned, or painted with enamels, popular throughout the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe and America.

These pieces were constructed from beaten or sheet metal, coated with multiple layers of varnish or japan, and frequently decorated by hand using gilding, stencilling, or painting techniques.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit signs of age such as craquelure in the lacquer, natural surface wear, hand-forged or soldered seams, and period-appropriate pigments rather than modern synthetic finishes.

It can be positioned on open shelving, sideboards, or mantelpieces to add metallic texture, historical depth, and contrasting dark colours to a contemporary living space.

Keep items away from direct sunlight and high humidity, dust gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoid liquid cleaners or abrasive agents that could damage the delicate surface lacquer.
