A writing slope is a portable slant-topped desk used for correspondence and document storage, which gained significant popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries as literacy rates and travel increased.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, frequently accented with brass escutcheons, corner brackets, and intricate stringing.

Authentic pieces generally feature period construction methods such as dovetail joints, hand-cut screws, secondary softwood linings, and aged patination on the timber and metal hardware.

It can be placed closed on a console table, desk, or bookshelf to add texture, warmth, and historical interest while serving as functional storage for small items.

Maintain antique rosewood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and occasionally apply a microcrystalline wax to nourish the polished surface.
