Imari porcelain originates from the town of Arita in Hizen province, Japan, and was extensively exported to Europe from the late 17th century through the port of Imari during the Edo period.

Imari pieces are crafted from fine kaolin clay, fired at high temperatures, and traditionally decorated under-glaze in cobalt blue and over-glaze in iron red, often accented with gilt details.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit subtle irregularities in the hand-painted motifs, soft glaze pooling, and microscopic wear consistent with age, alongside characteristic iron-foot rims unglazed from firing.

These decorative objects can be placed centrally on a sideboard or mantelpiece to provide a striking focal point, contrasting against neutral walls and minimalist modern furnishings.

To preserve antique ceramics, keep them out of direct sunlight, dust gently with a soft dry brush, and avoid washing in water or using chemical cleaning agents.
