This pair of Japanese export bottle-shaped vases dates from 1900 and displays the distinctive Imari style. Formed from white porcelain with a glossy glaze, the pieces showcase hand-painted decoration incorporating terracotta, cobalt blue, gold and green enamel colours. The bulbous bodies feature intricate panels depicting figures in traditional dress within interior and landscape settings, surrounded by dense floral motifs and gilt accents. The elongated necks carry smaller vertical landscape panels framed by blue and red foliate patterns, terminating in narrow, plain rims above flared round bases. Each vase measures 28 cm high, 16 cm wide and 16 cm deep. Suitable for display in traditional or eclectic interiors, these decorative items fit well on a mantelpiece, a console table or a display cabinet. They add a vibrant focal point to a living room, study or dining room, complementing other Asian ceramics or English country house collections. The balanced proportions and detailed hand-painted work make them appropriate for placement where they can be viewed closely to appreciate the complex palette and narrative scenes.

Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province. Characterised by its distinctive underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze terracotta red, orange, and gold decorations, it became widely exported to Europe from the seventeenth century onwards.

Imari ware is crafted from fine porcelain clay fired at high temperatures. The cobalt blue design is applied as an underglaze before the initial firing, followed by overglaze enamel colours such as iron red and gold gilding before a second, lower-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit hand-painted decorative panels, minor imperfections in the glaze or potting, and characteristic cobalt blue combined with iron-red enamelling. Early export pieces often feature spur marks on the base and soft wear to the overglaze gilding.

Imari porcelain introduces rich colour and historic craftsmanship to contemporary spaces. Position a pair symmetrically on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table against neutral walls to highlight their intricate figurative motifs and warm colour palette.

Clean gently using a soft, dry dust cloth or a slightly damp microfibre cloth with lukewarm water. Avoid abrasive chemical cleaners, scrubbing pads, or soaking, as harsh treatment can rub away delicate hand-applied overglaze gilding and enamels.
