Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan, taking its name from the export port of Imari. It is characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, gilding, and intricate floral or avian motifs.

These items are crafted from kaolin clay and fired at high temperatures to produce hard-paste porcelain. The multi-stage decoration involves applying underglaze cobalt blue before initial firing, followed by hand-painted enamel colours over the glaze in subsequent low-temperature firings.

Authentic pieces display characteristic palette combinations, hand-painted variations in brushwork, occasional spur marks on the base, and minor wear to overglaze enamels consistent with age. The underlying porcelain body often features slight kiln-related irregularities.
