This 18th-century Georgian cordial glass exhibits a clear glass body crafted from lead glass. The vessel comprises a small conical bowl mounted above a geometric facet-cut stem, terminating in a flat circular foot. The transparent finish reveals the reflective cuts along the stem and the smooth contours of the foot. It stands 15.1 cm high, with a width of 4.5 cm and a depth of 7.5 cm. Positioned on a sideboard top, this piece serves as a decorative or functional item for display in an English country house interior. The clear composition allows it to integrate easily with various glass collections and tablescapes. Hand-washing is recommended to preserve the integrity of the antique glass material during daily use.

FAQs

A Georgian facet cut cordial glass is a small 18th-century English drinking vessel crafted specifically for serving strong spirits, cordials, and liqueurs. Characterised by geometric cut diamond or hexagonal patterns along the stem, these glasses were designed to reflect candlelight across formal dining settings.

During the late 18th century, English glassmakers used lead crystal, also known as flint glass, which incorporated lead oxide. This formulation produced heavy, high-clarity glass suitable for wheel-cutting deep facets and complex optical patterns.

Authentic period stemware often features a greyish or dark tint in the lead glass, a subtle snap mark or ground pontil on the underside of the conical foot, and irregular hand-cut stem facets. Soft, uneven wear patterns on the rim of the base foot also indicate age and genuine historic use.

Antique glassware can be styled by arranging grouped stems inside a glass-fronted cabinet, on a dining sideboard tray, or alongside books on open shelving. Combining pieces of varying stem heights creates a balanced, layered display that catches natural light.

Antique lead glass must be hand washed individually in lukewarm water using mild detergent and a soft sponge. Dishwashers must be avoided due to the risk of clouding and thermal shock, and items should be stored upright without touching adjacent glass objects.
