Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, emerged in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement by Robert Hooke around 1670, which allowed for longer pendulums and narrower weights.

These clocks are traditionally constructed from solid native timbers such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring brass dial faces, hand-engraved chapter rings, and weight-driven mechanical movements housed within a tall wooden case.

Authentic period pieces often feature hand-cut dovetail joints in the trunk and base, original brass dial spandrels, movement signatures corresponding to recorded makers, and timber showing natural age-related shrinkage and patination.

A tall wooden timekeeper serves as a striking architectural focal point in a hallway, living room, or study, grounding contemporary spaces with traditional craftsmanship and warm organic textures.

To maintain mechanical integrity, these timepieces require professional servicing every few years, careful winding according to the movement type, and placement away from direct sunlight and dramatic humidity fluctuations.
