Burr walnut refers to wood taken from the burl of a walnut tree, known for its intricate swirling grain patterns. It gained significant popularity during the Queen Anne and Georgian periods, and experienced a major revival during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

These pieces typically utilise fine walnut veneers applied over secondary woods such as oak or pine, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers and traditional mortise and tenon joinery for the frames.

Authenticity is identified by examining the natural irregularities in the veneer grain, hand-forged or period-appropriate brass hardware, traditional joinery methods, and signs of age-related patina and oxidisation on the timber surfaces.

They can be paired with contemporary upholstered beds or minimalist decor to create a balanced contrast, allowing the rich texture and warm tones of the wood to serve as a focal point.

Preserve the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying or cracking. Clean only with a soft, dry cloth and periodically nourish the timber with appropriate quality beeswax.
