Description

A smart and very well made antique Victorian mahogany cabinet. It’s really meant to be a bookcase with doors. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1840-1860 period.

The quality is fantastic, this is a useful size being quite large and containing plenty of storage space. It is also quite slim from front to back, so doesn’t impose too much. The doors are panelled, and open to reveal three adjustable shelves.

We have recently had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age.

Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901), encompassing various revival styles that often utilised dense, rich timbers like mahogany, walnut, and rosewood with sturdy, functional construction.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods and veneers such as mahogany, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, brass hardware, and panelled doors crafted by skilled artisans.

Authenticity is indicated by period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetailing, signs of age-related patina on the timber, original backboards, and traditional hand-finishing techniques rather than modern mechanical fasteners.

Pairing dark wood period furniture with neutral walls, minimalist decor, and contemporary lighting creates a balanced scheme that highlights the rich grain and historical character of the timber.

Maintain antique timber by keeping it out of direct sunlight, avoiding extreme temperature fluctuations, and periodically applying quality beeswax while dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth.
