Description

A smart and quite unusual antique George III period mahogany side cabinet. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1790-1810 period.

It is of superb quality, with an interesting locking mechanism on the side rather than on the front. This has panelled door and sits on bracket feet, with two removable shelves inside.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some minor wear here and there remaining beneath the polish, with a gorgeous overall patina.

The George III period spans from 1760 to 1820, encompassing neoclassical influences, refined proportions, and the extensive use of high-quality imported timbers such as mahogany.

These pieces typically utilised solid mahogany and pine secondary woods, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged construction, and panelled doors crafted by skilled cabinet makers.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate timber patination, hand-cut joinery, original backboards, and signs of age-related wear such as oxidisation and minor shrinkage cracks.

Pairing the rich brown timber with contemporary minimalist decor, neutral walls, or placing it as an accent piece in a modern living space creates a sophisticated, eclectic contrast.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting with a dry lint-free cloth, and occasionally applying pure beeswax to nourish the wood.
