Pier cabinets became popular during the 19th century, designed specifically to fit against the wall space between windows, known as the pier. Marquetry techniques, involving the intricate fitting of contrasting wood veneers, were heavily utilised during this period to create decorative floral and geometric motifs.

These cabinets are typically constructed using a secondary softwood carcass overlaid with fine hardwoods such as walnut. Artisans applied hand-cut veneers and detailed marquetry, often accented with cast gilt-bronze or brass mounts and glass panels.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut veneers with minor irregularities, traditional joinery methods such as dovetailing on internal components, and natural ageing of the wood and brass hardware, including oxidation and shrinkage cracks in the veneer.

A marquetry cabinet serves as a focal point in a contemporary room when paired with neutral walls and minimalist furniture, allowing the craftsmanship and warm wood tones to stand out without visual clutter.

Preserve antique walnut by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent the wood and veneer from drying out and cracking. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally apply a quality microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
