Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in Britain following the introduction of the anchor escapement in the late 17th century, designed to house long pendulums and weights for enhanced timekeeping accuracy.

These clocks are traditionally constructed from solid timbers such as oak, mahogany, walnut, or pine, frequently featuring brass dial faces, engraved spandrels, and glass viewing panels.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-cut joinery, the ageing of the timber, the makers signature on the brass dial, and the presence of mechanical movements consistent with the period.

A longcase clock serves as a strong architectural focal point in a hallway, study, or living space, grounding modern minimalist rooms with traditional texture and historical character.

They should be placed away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking, kept level on a stable floor, and serviced periodically by a professional horologist.
