Description

This is an unusual example of an antique solid sterling silver snuff box.

It is clearly hallmarked inside the lid (with partial hallmarked on the rim) for Birmingham 1899, with the maker's mark for Rose & Brough. The partnership lasted only two years.

Foliage and swags on the top surround an empty shield-shaped cartouche. The sides are also patterned and partially gilded. The gilding inside is in very good condition. The gilding outside has been rubbed away on the base corners and also, I think, from the top in parts. I suspect the cartouche was never gilded but some of the leaves are and some are not, so perhaps a little rubbing there. It is priced accordingly. The hinge is good and the silver undamaged.

Dimensions:

Length: 5cm

A Victorian silver snuff box is a small, hinged container historically used to hold powdered tobacco, known as snuff, which gained immense popularity during the 19th century.

These boxes were typically fabricated from sterling silver, often featuring fire-gilding or partial gilding on the interior, and decorated using techniques such as hand engraving, chasing, and repousse.

Authentic pieces usually bear British hallmarks indicating the assay office, standard of silver, and date letter, alongside makers marks stamped into the metal.

Such small decorative objects work well displayed on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or coffee table as part of a curated vignette with other small collectibles.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a non-abrasive microfiber cloth and specialized silver cleaner, avoiding harsh dips that can strip historical patina or gilding.
