Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement by Robert Hooke, which allowed for longer pendulums and narrower cases.

Traditional longcase clocks were primarily constructed from solid timbers such as oak, mahogany, walnut, and fruitwood, often featuring brass dial faces, steel movements, and lead or cast-iron weights.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-cut components, traditional joinery in the case construction, aged patination on the timber, and maker signatures engraved onto the brass dial face.

An antique longcase clock serves as a striking focal point in a hallway, living room, or study, providing a strong vertical element that contrasts effectively against minimalist contemporary walls.

Preservation involves keeping the clock away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking, and having the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years.
