Georgian Norfolk Longcase Clock, Samuel Buxton, Diss, Imposing
£1,500 $2,024 €1,751
Clockwise is delighted to present a fine and impressive George III thirty hour longcase clock having just enjoyed full and sympathetic restorations performed to the case, dial and movement.
Dating from circa 1760, in lovely condition and standing an imposing 2.32m (7 feet 7 inches) tall, the solid oak case has a lovely patina to it. There are three wooden finials adorning the hood (the centre one has been removed to fit) atop mini-plinths within decorative wood carving to the front and sides. Flanking the hood door are pillars adorned with brass capitals and quarter pillars to the rear and there is a viewing window to each side of the hood. The long trunk (with door and working lock) leads down to mouldings atop a base with a plain pediment.
The twelve inch dial is signed ''Samuel Buxton, Diss'' and is in gorgeous condition being a fine example of a brass and silvered dial with a working date window and scrolled flower-based engraving to the dial centre and flowers to the brass ...spandrels. A working seconds sub-dial completes the impressive appearance.
The birdcage rope-driven movement has been fully refurbished with new rope provided and the clock strikes the full hours on a beautifully mellow bell. This lovely piece of horological furniture benefits from my three year guarantee and delivery and set-up is available.
Samuel Buxton was apprenticed in 1754 to James Smyth of Saxmundham for two years, probably having served five years as an apprentice to another clockmaker - seven years was the standard length of apprenticeship. In 1761 he supplied a turret clock for St Mary''s Church in Diss which is still working to this day. He constructed another for St Mary the Virgin at Banham dating from 1768. Although he also made gold and silver-cased watches he specialised in thirty hour birdcage clock movements in oak country cases, just like this clock, and Samuel Buxton remains one of Norfolk''s finest and earliest clockmakers.
Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.
