Can I clean an original mercury glass plate?

You should only dust the front gently with a dry cloth. Modern glass cleaners contain chemicals that can seep behind the frame and damage the fragile silvering. Never attempt to clean the back of the glass. The mercury layer is toxic and crumbles easily if disturbed.

My frame has a split across the top pediment and some of the gilded finish is missing in the corners. Should I have this restored?

A stable split in the wood is part of the natural ageing process. Changes in room temperature cause the pine carcase to shrink, pulling the gesso with it. Most dealers leave these structural shifts alone. Missing gilding is a different matter. If the exposed gesso is powdery, it needs consolidating by a specialist. They will lay down matching gold leaf to protect the raw timber and blend the repair into the surrounding wear.

How are Georgian wall mirrors supposed to hang?

Most rely on heavy brass mirror plates screwed directly into the backboard and the wall. This keeps the frame flat against the plaster and distributes the weight safely. Avoid using picture wire or string. The larger architectural frames are too heavy, and the forward tilt distorts the reflection.

I have noticed that the backboards on these early pieces sometimes run side to side rather than top to bottom. Does the direction actually matter?

Horizontal backboards are standard on many eighteenth-century pieces. Makers used wide offcuts of deal or pine, securing them directly into the frame rebates. This method helped brace the mirror against twisting. The rough-sawn boards remain a good indicator of period construction methods.
