Can you re-silver an old mirror plate?

Re-silvering an antique glass plate isn't impossible, but it alters the character of the piece. Modern chemicals look much brighter and lack the subtle grey tone of aged backing. Most dealers prefer to leave the original glass untouched. A bit of foxing or cloudiness is expected and forms part of the historical record.

I have this heavy silver hand mirror but the glass is quite loose inside the frame and it rattles when I pick it up, can it be tightened?

Loose glass usually means the internal padding has degraded. Makers originally packed the space behind the plate with felt, paper or thin wood veneers to keep everything snug. Over a century, these materials compress or turn to dust. A skilled restorer can carefully prise back the metal bezel and insert fresh acid-free padding. It is a delicate job, as old glass cracks easily under uneven pressure.

How do you clean tortoiseshell mirror backs?

Use a dry microfibre cloth to wipe away surface dust. Water dulls the natural shine and weakens the organic material. A light application of microcrystalline wax restores dry surfaces. Buff it off gently.

Some regional workshops used cheaper domestic timbers like beech. They then stained the wood darker to mimic the expensive imported mahogany.
