Why are my chair legs different lengths?

This is standard wear from daily use on abrasive surfaces. Stone floors grind down the timber over time. People tend to tip back in their seats. This puts extra weight on the rear legs, causing them to wear down faster.

Can you paint an old wood chair?

Many of these seats were originally painted when new. A coat of milk paint or oil-based gloss provided protection against damp and kitchen grease. Stripping them back to bare wood became a trend later on. If the current surface is dry and holds no historic finish, adding a fresh coat of paint does no harm to the structure. Preparation is key. Clean the frame thoroughly before applying anything new.

I inherited a set from my grandmother but the joints feel a bit loose and they squeak when someone heavy sits down on them. Is this normal?

Wood shrinks and expands with seasonal humidity changes. Over a century of central heating cycles, animal glue dries out and the wedged joints can loosen slightly. A minor squeak is common and often fine if the chair feels stable. The frame shifts slightly under weight as the components rub together. If the legs wobble visibly, the joints need attention. A cabinetmaker can knock the loose pieces apart and re-glue them with traditional adhesive.

The seat on one of these has a long crack running right down the middle from the back to the front. Can it be saved?

Solid elm seats sometimes split along the grain if they dry out too fast near a radiator. This happens because a single wide board cannot expand freely when pinned by the legs. They are usually salvageable. A restorer will clean the split and glue the edges back together, sometimes adding wooden butterflies underneath for strength. The repair becomes part of the history. Once glued, the seat is just as strong as it was originally.
