Rare 17th Century Antique Period Oak Westmoreland Armchair

17th century
Description

Rare 17th Century Antique Period Oak Westmoreland Armchair

A superb, honest example of a beautiful, early period oak Lake District country armchair that is in completely original condition and is a fantastic colour. Very unusual as this 17th century antique chair stands on sledge feet for stability and has the use of an original weighted seat which indicates this early chair was designed for use whilst moving, perhaps aboard a ship. Another very unusual feature is that this seventeenth century chair is finished on the back with a raised panel, a moulded carved top rail and lovely shaped back stiles. The back rest is hand beautifully carved as is the crest rail, all pegged construction and the large, original counter balance, block of timber is to the front, underside of the chair seat, this helps to stop the chair tipping backwards. Large proportions, a fabulous early Lake District 17th century antique oak armchair of rare design and excellent presence.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
