ANTIQUE #SA984034

Fine Mid 18th Century Mahogany Armchair

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Holmes Antiques

An outstanding and rare George II Mahogany Armchair of good colour, in superb and very original condition. Having wonderfully carved foliate top rail, fluted uprights, and pierced splats with carved decoration. A rare feature is the serpentine shaped front rail with gadroon carved decoration to the bottom edge.

The cabriole legs carved with acanthus leaf, having foliate ear pieces with punch work and claw and ball feet. Circa 1755.

The Chair is of historical interest and of special interest to us due to the carved initials of the maker ( H I ) on the underneath side of the back seat rail. Quite remarkably we have had two identical pairs of single chairs of this design bearing the same initials to the seat rail.
