1930'S Regulator

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Chalfont Clocks
Description

A very fine regulator dating from 1936 in a restrained art deco style. The large precision 8 day movement with Harrison’s maintaining power and a dead beat escapement with six bar wheels, is beautifully made with blued steel screws, the clock even has it’s own original hand cut spanner for undoing the nuts that hold the movement to it’s bracket in the case. This clock is a one off made for a jewellery and watch shop by the proprietor and every detail has been considered down to the hook of the weight and the steel and brass pulley. The observatory dial is silvered with sharp engraving, the blued steel hands are finished with square tails adding a subtle deco element to the dial.

The attention to detail extends to the walnut and ebony case, made as an art deco take on a classic Scottish drumhead clock with rebated dust guards and a solid 2 inch thick mahogany back board, the case is in excellent condition.

This beautiful clock was made by John Clark, a jeweller and watchmaker from Forfar in Angus Scotland, who would have used it for timekeeping and setting customers watches, the case is proudly labelled twice by the local cabinet maker William Robertson would must have been extremely proud of his work.

This longcase clock originates from 1936 in a 1930s Modernism style, constructed from mahogany, glass, and brass in a warm brown colour. The floor-standing piece features a circular dial hood, a glazed trunk door displaying a brass cylindrical weight and pendulum, and a square base with shaped bracket feet. The design incorporates a subsidiary dial layout and a distinctive drumhead top, housing a silvered observatory dial with blued steel hands and sharp engraving. Cabinet work includes crisp linear mouldings and delicate wood grain patterns on the rectangular base panels. The clock measures 198 cm high, 36 cm wide, and 26 cm deep. Positioned in a gentleman's library or hallway, the clock serves as a functional timepiece and striking focal point within a domestic interior. The restrained art deco lines and rich timber tones complement traditional and modernist living spaces alike, while the transparent glazed trunk offers a view of the precision pendulum movement in operation. The upright proportions allow placement against narrow wall spaces where floor area is limited, adding vertical interest to the room layout.

A regulator clock is a precision timekeeping device created to provide an exact time standard for clockmakers and astronomical observatories. Originating in the eighteenth century, these timepieces prioritised accuracy through deadbeat escapements, temperature-compensated pendulums, and separate dial tracks for hours, minutes, and seconds.

Twentieth-century regulator cases were predominantly constructed using mahogany, walnut, or oak veneers over stable timber cores. Internal mechanisms feature heavy brass movement plates, steel arbors, cast weights, and silvered or enamelled metal dials protected by glass apertures.

Authentic 1930s regulators feature streamlined architectural cabinetwork with minimal ornamentation, reflecting the design trends of the decade. The dials typically display a distinct regulator layout with individual subsidiary tracks, driven by a weight-powered movement and a long pendulum visible through a glazed trunk.

A tall regulator clock provides a strong architectural accent in an entryway, formal study, or library. Positioning the piece against a neutral backdrop highlights the warm wood tone and clean vertical structure of the case without overwhelming contemporary decor.

Position the clock on a stable, level floor away from direct heat sources, draughts, and dampness to protect the timber case from warping. Mechanical movements require periodic lubrication and professional servicing by a qualified horologist every five to seven years.
