Description

Nicely proportioned and a neat size, seat height 37cm.

Structurally, the frame is solid and tight. A few isolated and historic wormholes on the stretchers, later sprung on the underside of the seat. If required I have the horse-hair padding for the back and seat.

Annotated in two locations, the uprights are signed in pencil 'A Garland' and the underside of one stretcher is impressed B.G.R.

The colloquial term Raeburn is used to describe a type of armchair favoured by the famous Scottish 18th century portrait artist Sir Henry Raeburn (1756-1823). South of the border, similar types of armchair are known as Gainsborough chairs.
