A Rare Scots Laburnum Side Chair, C.1820s

19th century
Description

A handsome, well constructed chair with rock solid frame, probably estate made from specifically grown local timber. As well as the often striking decorative figuring seen on Scots laburnum, the timber was also prized for its ability to take a high polish and its similarity to ebony as in the case of this example.

There is a small chip to the corner of the right leg, structurally insignificant and would be covered when re-upholstered.

Included in the sale are the horse-hair pad and a buddle of straw which was incorporated as part of the original canvas webbing at the front of the chair.

Height to top of the seat rail 41cm
