Description

Technical Description

An 18th-century Toastmaster Dram Glass dating to c1770.

A rare thick conical bowl, highly deceptive, above a narrow plain stem and conical foot.

We've had a few 18th century toastmaster glasses over the years and they are rare enough in their own right, however a conical bowl toastmaster from the mid 18th century period is a rare find indeed, most being round funnel.

A toastmaster glass is a historic drinking vessel featuring an unusually thick, solid internal bowl base that creates the optical illusion of holding a full measure of alcohol while actually containing only a tiny drop, allowing hosts to soberly participate in numerous toasts.

Eighteenth-century English drinking glasses were predominantly crafted from lead glass, known for its brilliant clarity and heavy weight, and were hand-blown and shaped using traditional artisan techniques.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit pontil marks on the underside of the foot, wear scratches consistent with age, minor air bubbles within the lead glass matrix, and characteristic 18th-century stem and bowl proportions.

Antique glassware can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, on open shelving with adequate backlighting, or arranged on sideboards to highlight the clarity and historical form against contemporary backgrounds.

Antique glass should be washed exclusively by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, dried immediately with a lint-free cloth, and kept away from sudden temperature fluctuations and direct sunlight.
