A superb quality pair of gilt salon chairs made for and from Clumber Park House the former country seat of the Dukes of Newcastle. The pair are of the highest quality with superb quality carving and wonderful original gilding. They stand on turned and tapered legs with fluted stems and a lobed baluster. There are carved wood rosettes uniting the cross rails which are also carved with a central motif of stylised shell with acanthus scrolls. The chair rails are all carved with running beading. The chair backs are a masterclass in carving with elaborated pierced lattice work centring on the most wonderful carved Ducal crown. The pair are in good untouched condition with some minor losses, flaking of the gilding and light overpainting on the backs of the legs. The chairs have been later upholstered but it is quite useable and in good condition. The pair retain the original Clumber Park catalogue stickers under the seats only one of which is legible.
