ANTIQUE #SA946385

A Scottish Enlightenment Era Library Bergere, Edinburgh C.1770

Sold by: Jeckyll & Co

A wonderful and rare armchair with original oilcloth upholstery to the back and arms and complimentary, but later upholstery to the seat. The back legs have a pleasing rake and the front legs are lined in boxwood with signature Edinburgh inlay.

The chair has had a life. It may have unwittingly become involved in a late night fracas at The Oyster Club or similar, and now bears a few scars. The joints at the back of both sides of the chair now have historic brass braces, and the chair now sits a few degrees from the perfectly symetrical. The are some inevitable scuffs and marks to the upholsery and there is a loss to the left arm terminal, see image.

However it is structurally sound and comfortable....and over the course of its life, may have borne eminent thinkers who helped shape the modern world!
