The hoop-shaped frame enclosing woven cane arms and seat, raised on lapetted front legs and brass castors, with original horsehair cushion.

The Roman inspired form is related, amongst others, to a group of library chairs in the collection Tatton Park in Cheshire. There a sabre front leg is favoured, however Gillows did use similar lappeted moulding on a suite of dining furniture now at Woolmers Estate, Longford, Tasmania, illustrated in Gillows: of Lancaster and London 1730-1840 by Susan E.
