Late 18th Century Scandinavian Metal Bound Box

Description

Late 18th century scandinavian metal bound box circa 1790.

Rare baroque inspired strong box with 3 locks on the front.  quite likely to have been a box of some importance during it's early life, being fitted with 3 locks which would have meant that keys would have been held by 3 different people.

Rectangular box with a slight cushion shaped lid.  carcass is made from pine and decorated with hand hammered and coloured sections of metal, which is held in place by the profuse strap work.  decorative handle to lid and pierced metal work to 3 of the corners.  lid opens to a plain interior, with obvious traces of being previously being fitted with paper.

1 metalwork corner missing, other minor expected losses to strap work.  expected surface marks.  locks do work, although quite temperamental.

A Scandinavian metal-bound box is a secure wooden storage casket originating from northern Europe during the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. These boxes were constructed to protect valuable personal belongings, financial deeds, or documents during transport or domestic storage.
