Antique English Victorian Aesthetic Mahogany Revolving Office Desk Armchair (Circa 1890)

19th century
Description

This is a fine quality antique English Victorian mahogany desk chair, from the aesthetic movement, with a revolving mechanism, circa 1890, boasting a rich patination, in good original condition. The Victorian mahogany desk chair is designed with bowed bar back; secured by shaped wraparound arms, with an intricate central pierced fretwork panel below, flanked by horizontal and vertical shaped support bars, all of which secure the back to the seat frame. This Victorian office chair benefits from a comfortable mahogany shaped ‘saddle seat’. The desk chair rotates 360 degrees on circular cast iron base, which incorporates ball bearings within the mechanism for a smooth swivel action. The chair mechanism has been cleaned and serviced and is in good working order. The Victorian mahogany desk chair stands on cabriole legs terminating on pad feet, which are united by Aesthetic shaped and pierced cross-stretchers. The swivel desk chair is very comfortable to sit on and it has a fantastic colour and is in good original condition.

This Victorian mahogany desk chair radiates a rich mahogany colour. As it boasts its original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

This revolving desk chair would look superb in a variety of rooms in the home, especially the office or study as it so comfortable. It would certainly grace any home, so don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.

The Aesthetic Movement

Aestheticism (also the Aesthetic movement) was an art movement in the late 19th century which privileged the aesthetic value of literature, music and the arts over their socio-political functions. According to Aestheticism, art should be produced to be beautiful, rather than to serve a moral, allegorical, or other didactic purpose, a sentiment exemplified by the slogan “art for art’s sake.” Aestheticism originated in 1860s England with a radical group of artists and designers, including William Morris and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. It flourished in the 1870s and 1880s, gaining prominence and the support of notable writers such as Walter Pater and Oscar Wilde. Aestheticism challenged the values of mainstream Victorian culture, as many Victorians believed that literature and art fulfilled important ethical roles. Writing in The Guardian, Fiona McCarthy states that “the aesthetic movement stood in stark and sometimes shocking contrast to the crass materialism of Britain in the 19th century.” Aestheticism was named by the critic Walter Hamilton in The Aesthetic Movement in England in 1882. By the 1890s, decadence, a term with origins in common with aestheticism, was in use across Europe. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aestheticism)

Condition Report:

This is a fine quality antique English Victorian mahogany desk chair, from the aesthetic movement, with a revolving mechanism, circa 1890, boasting a rich patination, in good original condition. The office chair frame has been cleaned and wax polished in our workshop. Nominal old use marks to the seat and leading edges of the chair frame, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Old repair to the left vertical arm support and the corner of bowed top rail – these areas are solid in joint. The chair rotates smoothly on its original cast iron mechanism, which incorporates ball bearings for a smooth revolving action, having been cleaned and serviced. There is some play to the mechanism, but this is perfectly acceptable, and in line with the age of the chair (this will be found in all office chairs of this age). The Victorian mahogany desk chair is well constructed, solid in joint and ready to use.
