Here we have a very rare set of 8 George III Oak country chairs by Clarkson of Wolverhampton c1800. As you can see the chairs have great colour and patina. There are Chippendale style backs with carved and peirced splats and squared and tapered seats. There are rush drop in seats with three of the seats being freshly done. The chairs are of pegged mortice and tenon construction and have stretchers to three sides. The chairs have lovely provenance being labelled for Clarkson of Snow Hill Wolverhampton. Thomas Clarkson & Sons have been in existence since the 17th century. The Clarkson family were first recorded as clockmakers in London in 1640. In 1755, Hewitt Clarkson moved the business to Cock Street, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. The family continued to trade there successfully, manufacturing long-case clocks. In about 1780, the business moved to Dudley Street, later known as Snow Hill, in Wolverhampton. In 1840, in response to the declining popularity of long-case clocks, the family founded a furniture business at Snow Hill. In 1871, it acquired the freehold of the premises.
