With original canvas and upholstery to the back. Structurally sound and ready to be re-covered, re-railed. These chairs were described as ''mattress chairs'' in the 18th century and were a staple furnishing for many country houses. Thomas Chippendale and Alexander Peter made a fleet of them for Dumfries House and more can be seen in the collection of the Duke of Atholl at Blair Castle.
Provenance: The Kinnaird family of Rossie Priory, near Inchture Perthshire. Rossie Priory was designed by the eminient gothic architect William Atkinson in 1807, although buiding didn''t begin for another decade. This chair obvioulsy pre-dates Rossie Priory and may have originally come from Drimmie House, the Kinnairds former home, which was demolished when the new house was completed.
