An outstanding and rare pair of mid 18th Century Mahogany Side Chairs of good colour, in superb original condition. Each with foliate carved top rails, fluted uprights, and pierced splats with carved decoration. Having the rare feature of serpentine shaped front rails with gadroon carved decoration to the bottom edge.
The cabriole legs carved with acanthus leaf, foliate ear pieces with punch work and claw and ball feet. Circa 1755.
These Chairs are carved with the initials of the maker ( H I ) on the underneath side of the back seat rail. Quite remarkably we had an identical pair that are now sold bearing the same initials to the seat rail.
A pair of chairs of similar design sold at Sotheby''s New York ''A Celebration Of The English Country House'' on the 16th April 2005.
