This is an antique Savonarola armchair. An English, walnut seat with overt Gothic revival overtones by James Shoolbred, dating to the Victorian period, circa 1880. So named for the 15th century Italian Dominican priest Girolamo Savonarola, the progenitor for this style of chair was found in the convent of the San Marco in Florence.
